Tuesday,,,Isn't It?
James and Zach had doctors appointments this morning and we arrived in Helena a little early so we drove over to see if the road was still closed going to the River Park (it still was last week). The road was finally opened so we crossed over the levee to go see how much damage the flooding did to the park.
I love going to this little park to sit and watch the barge traffic and other boats going by. When I worked in Helena, years ago, I would often take a sandwich and spend my lunch hour on the board walk.
This is the river park which is on the river bank, across the Mississippi River levee from Helena.
I think if you click to enlarge this photo, you can see the water marks on the board walk where it was all covered in flood waters except for a little of the railing. All this water seen here is not there when the river is below flood stage.
The Mississippi River looking north, towards Memphis. Those little bush tops sticking up on the right side of the photo is the river bank when it's not flooded. The road we're on(which is built up but is much lower than the main levee) was completely under water this time last week.
These are trees which show how high the water was before it started receding. I took this shot from the road also.

Pay It Forward
I decided to play along with Miz Donna when she was paying it forward from Lille Meg's site. Because I was the first commenter on Miz Donna's site, she sent me this neat book to add to my library.
My little contributions for Pay It Forward include a Liz & Company lady's wallet, a set of 4 ivory colored napkins, and a pair of earrings. I'll send one of these to the first three commenters for this post.
This is a neat thing to participate in....The rule is simple....IF you want to do this, just be one of the FIRST THREE Commenters!!! The first Three people who leave a comment promise to Pay It Forward to the next Three people who leave comments on Their blog. If you don't think you want to do this, don't leave a comment or indicate in your comment that you don't want to play.
Also, the first 3 commenters need to send their snail mail address to my email.
So, what do you think? Wanna play?

Saturday Post
It was getting dark yesterday evening but I took these photos of momma Killdeer (above) and her rocky nest (below). She's raising 9 kinds of hell because she felt I was too close, she even pretended to be hurt to draw us away from the nest. Killdeers don't like to spend all their time sitting on their eggs so they will lay them among rocks and gravel so the heat of the day will incubate them.
My old, cranky butt is tired. The Beans stayed Thursday night and, even though she's sick with some nasty allergies and tummy troubles, she and I went out and helped PopPop do some planting in the garden on Friday. Bubbie, Jerri, and Alexis came to fetch the Beans and stayed to help out some too.
Earlier in the day I was going to rinse the mop out in the kitchen sink and found another frog hidden in it. Beans thought it was so funny that Nanaw had a frog in her kitchen sink but declined to carry it outdoors so it could find it's froggy Momma and Daddy. Nanaw had to do that little chore and of course the frog thanked me in the way that froggies tend to do, by wetting on my hand.
Today was Abby's birthday so we went to her party and had some fine hot dogs, burgers, cake and Ice cream. Her momma and daddy bought her an aquarium with some little fish and she was so very proud of her new pets.
James had some yummy ribs and a boston butt smoking on the grill when we got home so I ate a bite of that and then we made a flower bed in the front yard so I could plant some hollyhocks and glads.
I have big nap plans for our swing under the willow tree one day soon.

Tomorrow is Photo Challenge Day
Miz Donna and I, and anyone else who wants to participate, decided a few weeks ago to have a photo challenge every couple of weeks. I know that I love photography and there's so much that I want to learn so I'm hoping our challenges will give us practice and hopefully some feedback about our attempts to interpret our challenge subjects. Our first challenge will be Signs of Spring. It'll be Miz Donna's turn to set a date for the next challenge and a challenge subject. Are you game Miz Donna?
See ya'll tomorrow.

You know a boy lives in the household when,
You nearly pee your pants when you get up in the morning, you're still mostly asleep, and you end up doing a dance to avoid stepping on one of the TWO toads that were turned loose in your house by person, or persons, unknown.
That fella above was hiding in the potting soil when I was repotting a geranium. I think we both peed our pants during that little incident.

Look at what I did today
Mind you, other than going with James to the doctor, that's ALL I did that was constructive today. Due to the phone ringing every time I closed an eye, I didn't even get a nap! Anyway, ain't it purdy? I used the yellow and green paint to make it look sunflowerish and was right proud of my handiwork, until Zach came home, looked out the back door and said, "John Deere, huh"?

Mostly Lazy Day
It was just Abby and I at home today, she had a tummy ache so she stayed with me. I've protested loud and often about being labeled the "regular" babysitter around these parts but so far no one is listening. Might have to go to more drastic measures cause I sure do feel used a lot lately.
Abby is a good little girl so I got in a couple of little naps today while she sat quietly watching cartoons.
I planted the little pots of flowers I bought on Saturday. I put the gerber daisies and the miniature dahlia in the pots in front of the porch and the primroses in the porch flower box. I'm going to wait to see if the rose moss returns in the flower boxes, if it doesn't, I'll find a few more plants for that spot. I transplanted a geranium that Zach bought me at their school's hot house into a hanging pot, and I filled the hummingbird feeders just in case some of those little flying critters decide to come visit.
I've been watching my birdy regulars "wrestling" around the yard this month. The Brown Thrasher couple has built a new nest in the cedar tree but I haven't found where the Mockingbirds and doves have been laying their eggs. There's a Blue Jay couple down the road a piece that I'm going to try to keep my eye on. They are such magnificent birds although when they're nesting they can be very cranky. The Purple Martins are back and busy. I love watching them soar late in the evenings and listening to their busy chirps and tweets.
Tomorrow I'll take James for his doctor's appointment, I'm real excited about that. Not.
Well, that's about it for this day. As soon as this child (who was supposed to have been asleep 45 minutes ago) stops playing with that ball (that I'm going to throw out the back door), I'm going to take some ibupro and hit the hay, old Arthur is doling out misery to my hip and knee tonight.

Dance Recital 08
It's that time of year again so Zach and I went to watch Alexis (aka, the Chick) performing the dances that she's been practicing since last August. She's really growing up folks, she and the other girls in her age group were just perfect and oh so sweet!
The top photo is of her introduction during the Baby Parade, I think she's wearing her tap outfit.
The last photo, where she's wearing the green and white outfit, they were performing their ballet dance.
The center photo is of the only little boy who took dance this year. He put on quite a show and not one bit of it was anything similar to the dance that all the little girls in his group were doing. He was something else. I bet he keeps his momma busy.
Jerri was saying today that Jillian (aka, the Beans) will be old enough to start dance before the next session begins. I believe she'll give that little boy a run for his money.

Just One More
I thought I'd post once more to show off the sweet little plants and frog I found while shopping for a crepe myrtle this afternoon. I'll put the gerber daisy, primroses, and the other one (I forgot what it's called) in the planters in front of the porch. The frog is a guilt present, James killed my little boy statue last year with the mower so he bought me another frog to replace him. He'll join Fred and Ethyl's frog figurine family (I've had them for a year or two). I think I'll name this new one FFF, short for Fat Freddy Frog.
Whew!
Miz Abby and the Beans stayed with us last night. I woke up this morning with two little hands rubbing my back which were soon replaced with two little feet. I took this to be Jilly Bean's subtle message to me that it was time to get up.
I've already swept and mopped the kitchen floor once (it needs both again), I've washed dishes twice (I think they breed in my kitchen sink), and I made scrambled eggs and link sausages for breakfast. Just now, Beans is crashed out on the couch for one of her reviving naps, and I've picked up a whole, big, bucket full of large lego blocks.
I'm pooped and the day's not half over yet.

Lord, Give Me Strength.
I mean it, I really need a little some of that to keep me upright and going right now. I also need a little extra of that strength of character too so that I'll do better at biting my tongue when someone, or some thing, or some entity pisses me off.
And while I'm praying here, Lord, could You see what You can do about sending a Target down here to my area of the delta? This Wal Mart store, that I hate so much, is doing some redesigning and I think they (am I being punished for my hatred of this place?) are trying to cause me to have a screaming breakdown right in the middle of what was the card section 2 days ago, but has become part of the craft section today. For 2 days Lord, I've been trying to find Scott toilet tissue and some paper towels. I looked around as best I could in the time that I had, and even asked "associates" on two occasions about their the whereabouts of these needed items, but I got 2 different answers on two different days and I finally had to give up cause I was very near to a mental collapse by then. (this is also where that bit about strength of character comes in again).
Also Lord, I hope You were looking over my shoulder when I was editing and typing that paper awhile ago. My mind has gotten rusty lately and my body doesn't much care for these late nights followed by the early morning "get ups".
While You're listening, I'd like to mention that I sure need a heap of help with my patience with our babies these days too. Jilly Beans spent the night on Tuesday night and yesterday, two tears escaped from my eyes when she was out of sight long enough to use dusting powder on my chair and carpet while she was munching on a new tube of my lipstick,,, I know Lord, it was my fault for leaving the lipstick and powder on the table beside my chair after I'd removed them from the clutches of a previous perp, but I forget sometimes, and I'm not as diligent about child-proofing stuff as I was once upon a time.
I guess it would be too much to ask for maid service for a month, wouldn't it Lord? I know,, I know,, that's leaning towards the material side of things and I know how selfish that request sounds. I'll just keep plodding on, even though I can't ever seem to keep up with the messes these folks make around this place. Maybe if You send down a little of that strength I mentioned before, I'll manage to at least stay even with them for a few days. If not,,, maybe there's room under the couch and bed to hide some of it.
OK Lord, I'm going to finish this up before You get tired of listening and decide to sic one of those "associates" on me.
Thank You for listening today.
Amen.

A Nice Nanaw Break
I've had this niggling headache all day, went back to bed this morning for an hour or so, then slept for 2 1/2 hours this afternoon. I woke up just before the school bus came rumbling into the drive to discharge Zach, MeriKate, Krysten, and Abby. I helped the two youngest with homework, Zach and Krysten are having those yearly tests this week so they didn't have any.
I guess my men folk decided they needed to give me a little break from the same ole routine cause they cooked a fine supper of fried catfish, fries, and hushpuppies. Zach also laid a very nice table, all I had to do was throw together a salad. James even pre-loaded the dishwasher with the stuff he used while cooking so it only took a minute for me to put our plates in and start the load.
I haven't even had to argue and wrestle with Zach to get him to take a bath and brush his teeth!
What a wonderful evening I've had so far!

Southern and Country
Southern Lady
A very genteel Southern lady was driving across the
Savannah River Bridge in Georgia one day. As she neared the top of the
bridge, she noticed a young man fixen {getting ready} to jump.
She stopped her car, rolled down the window and said,
"Please, don't jump; think of your dear mother and father."
He replied, "Mom and Dad are both dead; I'm going to jump."
She said, "Well, think of your wife and children."
He replied, "I'm not married and I don't have any kids."
She said, "Well, think of Robert E. Lee"
He replied, "Who's Robert E. Lee?"
She replied, "Well, bless your heart, just go ahead
and jump, you dumb-ass Yankee."

I'm Leaning Towards Balastic!
It seems that all I do lately is rant here. I'm not sure if the world and some of the people in it are being total assholes, or if I'm just a total asshole and I see the world and some of the people in it that way. Either way, I sure am getting pushed towards an agitated state much quicker these days.
I really do try, most days, to start out in a good mood, but somewhere along the way (usually within the first 30 minutes of awakening) it all goes to pot and there she blows.
My lastest rant concerns the doctor's appointment that James was supposed to have had at Pillow Clinic today. I called them early yesterday to see about getting him an appointment there after finding out that, our family doctor was out of town until Monday, the other doctor at his place was booked up, and the NP was only taking walk-ins (which would have meant sitting all day in the waiting room in order for her to spend 5 minutes glancing at his toe. He wanted to make sure his wound was clear of infection before the weekend when you can't find a smell of a doctor.)
When I called I told them he'd had a farm accident, which part of his body needed checking, what had happened, all the relevant personal information, and also told them that the visit would be billed to the farm's insurance company either through the general liability policy or worker's comp. She told me his appointment time was 2:oo p.m. and he would be seeing Jim.
We arrived a little early in case I needed to fill out any forms for James (I guess all the limping made his hand and arm tired), so I go up to reception and when they asked for insurance information I told them the name of the Insurance company and that it would be a workers comp claim. The woman looked at me and said,
"We don't see worker's comp patients.
I'm thinking, "¿qué la cogida?"
I asked her why we weren't informed of this when I'd called to set up the appointment and had TOLD them ALL of the information they would be needing.
She had no idea. (boy I'm becoming familiar with THAT reply)
I felt like a bum asking for a hand-out. I started to take James's insurance card out of my wallet, and my check book, but James shook his head and said we were leaving. As we walked out the door, I looked around their waiting room and saw that it was probably 90% full of Medicaid patients (don't ask me how I know, I just do, ok?). I know the paperwork and headache it entails to file a Medicaid claim, so what's up with them not "taking" a patient who's bill would be paid by worker's comp? Do the worker's comp insurance companies take a long time to pay or something? (and the government doesn't?) Do worker's comp patients have leprosy?

All Night Storms
As the sun was trying to rise in the east, a final line of storms moved in from the west this morning. The view of the clouds was awesome, even through my sleep deprived eyes, so I grabbed my camera to try to capture the beauty of Mother Nature's way of giving us a little more to drink.
It rained all night long as storm after storm came through the delta. The lightening was bright and sharp, and the thunder rumbled so loud and long that I could feel the vibrations as I tried to sleep. The storms didn't spawn any tornadoes in our area but there were some mighty gusty winds blowing through here.
I'm driving James to the doctor today so he can have a look to make sure he's on the mend. With all the bad bugs you hear about on the news, I just think it's a good idea to be on the cautious side even though I scrub and scrub before I even touch his bandage.
It'll feel good to get out awhile, might even keep me from doing some bodily harm to someone.
I got the results of the CT scan last week and was happy to find out that the lump in my thigh is some sort of muscle scar tissue where old arthur has wrecked havoc so although it's painful, it's not going to put me down anytime soon.

Frustrated, Flustered, and Aggravated
Zach's lost most of his colored markers again (I've bought new ones 3 times since September) so instead of looking behind or in furniture, or digging through that junk pile in his closet, he decides he'll help himself to as many of my NEW gel pens as he can cram into his pocket this morning. I didn't discover this until he was stepping on the bus so I won't be able to tie him to a pole and torture him until he gets home this afternoon. I also won't be doing any scrapbooking or card making today as I previously thought I might.
How do I make this kid understand that it's not right to "borrow" things that don't belong to him? He seems to think anything in this house is his to use or destroy as he sees fit.
Then there's The Man. The one with the big, fat, mushed toe. The one who won't stay put for very long with it elevated (like he's supposed to), and then wonders why it's still bleeding through the bandage and throbbing like the dickens. The one who'll decide he wants a snack, after I've asked him several times if he needs something, so hobbles into the kitchen to fry ham and an egg but undoubtedly is in too much pain to clean up his mess.
I feel like kicking something!

Wednesday Mind Wanderings
Except for a little moaning and groaning, the Man has been a pretty good patient. I haven't made him scream even once while changing the dressing on his wound. Zach assisted me last night, but as soon as he saw a little trail of blood seeping out from the bandage I was removing, he decided he'd assist by touch, not sight. He's not even limping from his little accident in the tub and he went to Tae kwon Do last night, so, except for some bruises, he's fine.
I wish I'd had my camera while we were in the waiting area of the emergency room on Monday. There was this female patient, who I suspect was cracked out to the limit, who came out in a wheel chair, wearing one of those backless hospital gowns. It wasn't tied and was too big, so when she decided she'd get up and walk to the door to go outside to wait for her ride, the gown fell off and she just kept walking to the outdoors and stood on the sidewalk waiting,,,naked as a jaybird. Didn't seem to bother her one bit. I nearly peed myself laughing. I don't know what she was on but I wonder if I might need a little of it.
When we finally saw the emergency room doctor and he was apologizing for the wait caused by folks coming in that should be visiting a doctor's office instead, I told him about the show one of the patients put on for us in the waiting room. He laughed and told me that they should shoot a reality show there because there was always something wild going on.
It's raining again today and the weather folks are predicting severe thunderstorms tomorrow and tomorrow night. We really need some dry weather for a few weeks now, it's time to plant the crops and MY garden.
I hope everyone's having a great day!

Q: Is it common for 60+ year olds to have problems with short term memory storage? A: Storing memory is not a problem, retrieving it is a problem.
Q: As people age, do they sleep more soundly? A: Yes, but usually in the afternoon.
Q: Where should 60+ year olds look for eye glasses? A: On their foreheads.
Q: What is the most common remark made by 60+ year olds when they enter antique stores? A: "Gosh, I remember these."
Q: Where can men over the age of 60 find younger, sexy women who are interested in them? A: Try a bookstore-------under fiction.
Q: What can a man do while his wife is going through menopause? A: Keep busy. If you're handy with tools, you can finish the basement. When you are done you will have a place to live.
Q: Someone has told me that menopause is mentioned in the Bible. Is that true? Where can it be found?A: Yes. Matthew 14:92: "And Mary rode Joseph's ass all the way to Egypt ."
Q: How can you increase the heart rate of your 60+ year old husband? A: Tell him you're pregnant.
Q: How can you avoid that terrible curse of the elderly-----wrinkles? A: Take off your glasses

Big Ouch and Little Ouch
I was going to kick back and have a relaxing day today but my plans didn't exactly pan out. About 12:30 I'd just turned on the Lifetime TV channel and was heading to the kitchen to do a couple of dinner preps that needed doing early when the phone rang. I heard "Brenda, garble, garble, garble, emergency room, garble," then dead air. I knew it was James when he said my name and when I heard the emergency room part I started to panic so I tried calling back, nothing. I tried again, and again, but nothing. By then I was rushing around trying to get dressed while brushing my teeth, still carrying the phone, when it rang again. James said he was on the way to the emergency room but then he had to hand the phone to someone else because he said he was "getting sick".
I was freaking out by this time.
The other farm manager was finally able to tell me what was going on. One of the dimwits, actually the biggest dimwit on the farm, had hit a lever on the backhoe while James was working on the bucket and the bucket fell on his feet. He told me he was taking him to the emergency room, he was bleeding, he thought most of the damage was to his big toe, and would I please meet them there.
So, we spent the whole afternoon in the emergency room. James's big toe looked like what a watermelon looks like when you drop it, sort of exploded. The emergency room doc did a pretty good job of stitching everything back together, I even assisted a little by holding his second toe out of the way so he could stitch that side up, and held James's leg still because the nerves were twitching from the pain he was in. (I wouldn't make a good nurse folks, that wasn't anything fun to watch.)
After we left the emergency room we went to the pharmacy to pick up some loracet and bandage supplies and finally made it home around 5. I finally got the big man fed, foot propped up, meds in him and came in here to my computer when I heard this awful BOOM and BANG that knocked the picture and bulletin board off my wall. Zach was taking a shower on the other side of that wall so I jumped up and ran to see what was going on. He'd locked the door so I had to wait for him to unlock it, and all the while he was crying. When I could finally get to him I found that he'd slipped on his soap and had hit both shins on the side of the tub and now has two goose egg sized knots.
It's going to be a long week folks.
Do they still make those tension rods for the shower curtains? I'm going to be needing some.

Few Critter views but loads of water
This is Old River, and those are trailers owned by weekend hunters and fishermen on what used to be the bank of Old River. I took this shot from atop the Mississippi River levee near Melwood. Old River is a left over channel of the Mississippi River after the Corp of Engineers straighted out some of the river curves back many decades ago. The Mississippi River bank is over on the other side of the second line of trees. You can see a little of how far Old Man River has spread over his banks here, but where the levees are further apart, whole entire farms, thousands of acres, are covered in several feet of water.
The closest trees that you see here are close to the bottom of the levee. The trees further out are on the bank of the Mississippi. If you click to enlarge the photo, you can see the barge out there on the river.
Here's a closer look at a barge traveling up the river(on the left) and one traveling down river. I zoomed out as far as I could to get this shot.
This is a house that was built just last year near the bank of the Mississippi River. The levee, from where I took this shot, is about 1/2 mile from the house. The people who live here are having to boat in and out. The water surrounding the house is covering farm land that will have to wait to be planted until after the water drains off and the land dries enough.
We didn't get to travel down the part of the White River levee where all the deer and other critters would have likely been today due to the Army Corp of Engineers having that part of the levee closed off because of the flooding. I was very disappointed that the only critter photos I was able to get were of a few ducks, a crane, and a few fishermen. We did see 1 doe deer and a bald eagle today, but I wasn't quick enough with my camera to get shots of them.
The White River was flooded levee to levee down the part we were able to travel, and as you can see from the photos above, so was the Mississippi. The flood stage at Helena, near where we live, is 44 ft. and today the river stage is about 46.1 feet.

Gonna Ride the Levees
Most everyone who visits here knows that I live near the Mississippi River (who's flexing his muscles big time right now) here in Arkansas, but they might not know that I also don't live far from the White and St. Francis Rivers. Today James, Zach and I are going to take a drive on the levees to see all the flooding that's going on and hopefully catch sight (and some shots with my camera) of some of the critters that have been pushed out of the woods by the rising waters.
I sure would love to see a bear but we'll probably only see a bunch of deer or maybe a wild turkey or two.
I'll be back!
