Back When

I have a facination with old buildings and barns so on my way home yesterday I pulled off the highway to drive down a little lane to get closer to these old relics of times past. I've snapped photos of one of the old houses before, when it was covered in wisteria back in the spring.

I wonder what memories these old places hold?

I like you wonder about the people and their lives etc. when I pass an old house or barn? I have a neighbor who has a witch hazel tree and I am on my way over there to see if it is blooming and to get a "sniff".................

I think old places like that must be just full of memories - and stories that no one knows.

We have a family member who really likes old barns. I'll have to send her over to see your blog.

i think the same thing as i pass by old and abandoned homes and barns. sometimes i wonder how it is that a house just becomes unused. empty. neglected. very curious.

I always wonder the same things Brenda. And for houses, some of those would be fantastic houses if someone would just take care of them. Sometimes it makes me sad.

Those barns are beautiful. I love to look at old homesteads.

Don't you wish those old buildings could talk? I made up a story about an old covered school bus stop that was abandoned and covered with blackberries, and about all the kids it saw grow up and move on.

I love pictures of old barns, and those pictures are good ones. There are not many barns any more and it is sad.

When I saw the last picture, I nearly cried. It reminds me of the good old days back when we would visit the big house.

Sometimes, the family members cannot bear to knock the old houses down, and don't until there is a need for the land. Ours remained standing 20 years after the death of my grandmother. My cousin owned the land by then, and it was a very difficult time for us all when it had to come down. I still can hardly stand to drive by where it stood.

Thank you, Brenda.

Brenda, I, too, love to look at those old places. There used to be so many around here but they are quickly disappearing. Yes, it's the history that grabs my attention. What families lived there? What were they like? What happy/tragic events unfolded inside these buildings?

Great pictures, Brenda! I like old barns, myself. Seems like around here all I see are pole barns anymore. Those new metal buildings. But I've discovered that if you drive up north in Illinois and Indiana, there are still quite a few old wooden barns still in use.

Now that sounds like something I would have done when I used my old 35mm camera. With this new blasted digital I don't have the ability to reach out and get the good old shots. I think I need to get the old one repaired - it is only 30 years old.

GREAT pictures.

I love pictures like that, too. We found a picture of an old dilapidated trapper's cabin while we were on holidays last year and, like the barns, it makes me wonder about its history. It's an especially picturesque scene with new plantlife reclaiming the old buildings.

And I'm totally diggin' this cool coffee look! : )

I am an old barn freak. Everyone knows this so directs me to their latest finds too. My favorite thing is when sunlight shafts down through missing roof pieces. There is a small crew of barn restoration experts that can be hired to repair these old buildings, but I understand that they are booked for years. I love well-kept barns too, but the ones that are nearly falling down really draw me in.
