Just in caseI don't make it back tomorrow.

I promised Zach we'd buy him some fireworks for tomorrow night and we'd try to stay up to greet the new year. I stopped going out to celebrate the festivities a few years ago when I found it too hard to keep my eyes open long enough to enjoy a party.

I've also got to get my ingredients ready to cook up a big ole pot of black eyed peas for dinner New Year's Day. I'm going to try cooking them a little different this time with the usual ham, but with an addition of some seasoning veggies, and also simmer them in chicken broth. I'll let you know how they turn out. There will for sure be a big pan of hot cornbread to go along with them.

Black eyed peas have long been a southern tradition for the New Year's table. They supposedly bring good luck for the coming year, and eating them shows "humility". Some Southerners have been rumored to eat one pea for each day of the year to insure good fortune! They are a humble food, therefore, eating them represents humility. The taste of black eyed peas are unlike other beans, and unless you've grown up eating them, you may find the taste a bit "earthy".

Whatever ya'll do to celebrate the coming New Year, make sure to have loads of fun and stay safe!

I certainly hope you make it back tomorrow!! Dinner sounds great! We are having Tenderloin and shrimp tomorrow night...traditional for us to eat a late dinner...but we are not going out either. Not that I can't stay awake. My husband can't! And, I don't like being out and about on the roads! Have a Happy New Year, Brenda!!

Thanks for reminding me!
I have some smoked ham hocks, salt pork and ham and a bag of black eyed peas! I'm putting them on in a few minutes to simmer in my crock pot all day tomorrow to be just right on New Years Day!!
Be safe with those fireworks!

Good Morning Brenda,
"HAPPY NEW YEAR" to you and yours from our Family. I will also be cooking a pot of Black-Eyed Peas here along with some homemade Buttermilk cornbread. I have a head of cabbage, but don't know if I will cook it yet or not. I have a Ham Hock that I'm putting in my Black-Eyed Peas. They used to sell Fireworks here for New Year's Eve, but they don't anymore. The only time they sell them around here are 4th of July. I've never put any Chicken broth in my peas before. I may have to try that. Take care my friend and have a great Monday. May God Bless You and Yours.

Hugs,
Karen H.

I love black eyed peas and cornbread. But then I lived in the south for 10 years (and loved it)

Happy new year to you and your family.

I love Black Eyed Peas, and 40 years ago I did cook some.
Now, I don't really know how but I have to buy ham for our family party Saturday, and I think I will just buy some dry peas at the same time.
The left parts of the ham will start me off but from there I will have to do some digging for a recipe.
This part of the country doesn't cook them, they don't know what is good!!!
Happy New Year and happy cooking, let me know how your new way is.
I need all the help I can get.

My Mom always made them, and I HATED them, they tasted like dirt to me. I had Ham though!
